Which LED light benefits to cannabis?

Cannabis plants use light frequencies in the range of 390 to 730 nanometers (nm), for photosynthesis. This spectrum of light that is capable of absorbing the cannabis plant is called PAR (active photosynthetic radiation).

We will see in detail how the different ranges of frequency of the LED light in your indoor crop is used by the marijuana plant.

The photo-receptors of the cannabis plant can harness the energy of a broader spectrum of light. Our eyes can’t see part of the light that your cannabis plant can take advantage of.

The spotlights and led projectors for cannabis, should also contribute to the plants these components of light. That we do not see them does not mean that your cannabis plant does not need them.

Light that harnesses the cannabis plant

We are going to divide the PAR of the cannabis plant into five frequency ranges.

RANK 1 - Less than 390nm: ultraviolet (UV) light this spectrum of light is important for the quality and quantity of the resin in the flowering of marijuana. The quality and quantity of synthesized cannabinoids and terpenes are determined among other factors by UV rays.

To protect against the effects of ultraviolet rays your cannabis plants have developed a natural defense mechanism, the trichomes formed by alkaloids and flavonoids act as photo-protective molecules. Terpenes are aromatic molecules that transform ultraviolet rays into waves of light and less harmful energy.

Your cannabis plants will form a denser layer of resin, with more THC to protect against ultraviolet rays.

RANK 2 - Between 390-490nm: From violet to blue is where the maximum level of photon absorption by marijuana chlorophyll occurs, opening more stomata, increasing metabolism and consequently cannabis vegetative growth.

Cryptochrome is the most specialized photo receiver in this light spectrum. An excess of blue light slows the stretching of the cannabis stem, inhibiting auxin and apical dominance, forming lateral shoots and the plants become more leafy, resistant and shorter.

RANK 3 - Between 490-610nm: Includes green, yellow and orange, the marijuana plant has little absorption, but the canopy of the cannabis plant penetrates better. It is recommended a contribution of at least 10% of green light, to achieve a harvest of greater quantity and quality, since cannabis plants remain healthier and better metabolize nutrients.

RANK 4 - Between 610-720nm: In the red spectrum the marijuana plant produces a high absorption of photons. This color promotes the taste, quality and quantity of flowering of your marijuana. With red light, the production of meta-topoline is increased, a hormone that helps maintain high levels of chlorophyll in your cannabis plant. It also increases the concentration of terpenes.

The red light plays an important role in the decision of the plant to flourish or not. Due to this, dark periods must be protected very well from red light so as not to lengthen the cannabis harvest much.

RANK 5 - Between 720-740 nm: Infrared or far red, with low chlorophyll absorption of marijuana, but with influence on flowering and germination.
